Travel photography was my gig and my passion was to capture the drama of sweeping foreign landscapes and twinkling city lights at night.  Then, one day my son was born and after holding him for the first time and peeking into his little eyes I knew then.... that my nights of sleeping were limited.  So while I was destined to be sleep deprived, I also knew that moment was a gift that I wanted to remember forever. Soon my travels ended and my photography evolved and I now concentrate on capturing the pivotal moments of life (with a bit of landscape photography in the mix).  Whether that moment is the welcoming of a new person into our world or the union of a loving couple in marriage, it's these moments that mean so much.

I am many things: photographer, father, husband and even a registered nurse.  Oddly, I’m likely to be the one of the few photographers in Maine certified in providing advanced cardiac life support.  Thankfully that isn’t one of the tick boxes on most people’s lists.  I do feel that nursing has pushed me to this "celebration of life" outlet over the past ten years and helped me focus on what is really important.

Life is beautiful.  It’s seen in the emotion felt by a father as he walks his daughter down the aisle to her waiting husband to be, or in the joyous laughter of a child playing peek-a-boo with his mommy.  It’s in a new father holding his son for the first time knowing that he will be the future of his family.   Time will never stand still and those moments that bring us such joy become memories in an instant. To capture such a moment and record it forever is truly monumental. This is Lifesessions and welcome to my photography.  - Joshua Atticks


Every person is unique and my approach to each session is always different. My sessions are all 1-2 hours which leaves plenty of time for a variety of shots and locations, with room for clothing or nappy changes too. I use natural lighting as well as a small studio flash set up for lighting depending on the location and available light. My aim is to get at least 20-35 unique images in each session.

Newborns: My approach with newborns is slow, gentle and patient. There is no rush here and the newborn will dictate how the session moves along. I allocate a full two hours to each session leaving plenty of time for a variety of poses, feedings, and rest periods. Sessions generally take place in your home which offers a relaxed, familiar, low stressful place to enjoy the photography session. On my arrival we can discuss different posing options, locations and lighting as your baby become more familiar with my presence. I generally begin each session with a few images in mind, usually of the family holding, loving, and soaking up their newest little addition, however from there, each session varies incredibly. The types of images that result from any given session are very much a product of the family’s interactions with their sweet new baby, the dynamics of each family, and baby’s temperament.

Older babies, Children and Families: When photographing toddlers, older children and their families it often takes a bit of time to discover what is needed to create the magic. For some older babies or quieter children, this may mean that we are quiet, gentle, and slow moving. For others, it's all about the energy, being loud and having fun! Soon, as I find their style and befriending them as the session evolves, the great photos come. The location can be anywhere from your home, beach or park.

Engagement/Couples: When photographing couples in love I usually prefer to shoot in the evening or early morning (if willing) to get the beautiful low light. This light creates a romantic and beautiful mood that compliments this style of photography. The location is up to you and can be anywhere from a local beach, park, farm, or city. The location is just the background while the pictures will be focused on you and the interaction of you as a couple together. Expression always trumps when it comes to making a great photograph and therefore I let you do all the work. It's always a bit weird at first but one the ice is broken and we joke around the images pour out! It's always a blast!


2012 sessions fees

Option 1: 1-2 hours for the photo session, post processing, a slide show of the images set to music, private online proofing gallery, and a DVD containing the high resolution images from the session. Copyrights for printing is granted for personal use. À la carte prints are also available directly from Lifesessions Photography from the online proofing gallery. $175.00

I aim to provide you with truly unique images of you, as a couple surrounded by your loved ones and immersed in the special day you created. My images will portray the character, drama, beauty and emotion of your day as it unfolds and blinks away. My approach is simple; to produce images that document the day that are stylish, beautiful and moving.

I find the best way to show a prospective client who I am and the work I do is to offer a free "engagement session".  These are great fun and a perfect way to see how I work, my personality, and see the images I produce.  It's also the perfect time to get acquainted and become more comfortable in front of a big camera. I offer these sessions completely free of charge at any location you wish.  At the end you will be sent a DVD with the high resolution images to print as you like.  One of the couples I did a shoot for made a beautiful photo book of the images to use as guest book on their wedding day.  Once the photo shoot is done there is absolutely no obligation to book with me.  It works out great because I get some great images for my portfolio and you get some sweet images of you engaged and having a blast.

If you will feel that my style, personality, and service offered fit your need then please get in touch!  My pricing plans are simple and there are no hidden fees and when you are ready to book I will then send you a contract for signing. This contract which will need to be returned with a $200 deposit to secure the date (of course the deposit will be deducted from the final cost).  About one month prior to the wedding you will be sent a pre wedding questionnaire which will help me prepare for your big day and create the images you want to see.   

My approach is unobtrusive, natural and creative and my goal is to capture the day from start to finish and tell the story of your wedding with imagery.  I often incorporate a small bit of posing to nail that perfect image but for the most part I prefer to let the story unfold naturally. The day will fly by and as I cover the main event I always capture the little details too. An image can tell your story forever and your wedding photographs will be one of the only and lasting reminders of your special day. 

There is no limit to the images I can take and I usually average well over 800 depending on the length of the wedding and reception. When your special day is over and you are finally relaxing, I'll be busy optimizing each image to ensure quality. Within three weeks a link to your online slide show will be emailed to you. Soon after, an access code will be sent to you to view your online proofing gallery for purchasing prints, canvas art and albums. Prints purchased from the online proofing gallery are discounted at 50% from the a la carte price list (see below). All the edited images are then burned to a DVD in high resolution and shipped.  All copyright permissions for personal, non-commercial use are granted.
